Skaeve Huse Pilot Project

Skaeve Huse (Skave-Hoos) is a Danish term that roughly translates into 'special houses for special people'.  Skaeve Huse was created as a way to house persons who could no longer be housed through the regular housing system due to behavioural problems and continual relapses of drug and alcohol abuse.  It offers accommodation to a group of people to live with a certain degree of tolerance for their different outlook on life and the rest of society.
Shaeve Huse villages are located away from or shielded from the nearby community so not to disturb anyone with noise or anti-social behaviour.  The villages have relatively low density, much greenery, and a village-like character with a homogeneous population.

La Compagnie Artisans de la Paix's aim is to set up a Skaeve Huse village in Toronto for those persons who refuse to seek refuse in the city's shelter [when there is space], who can't obtain public housing, or who can't get into the appropriate drug and alcohol program and choose to sleep rough.
At full scale Shaeve Huse will be a case-study to determine how this type of housing structure will influence a persons behaviour, either positively or negatively and if it will serve as a stepping stone for people to want to better themselves and move out of the Shaeve Huse village.
The most ideal way to create these villages will be to employ the use of shipping containers.  Using shipping containers is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly and quick to set up as well as dismantle.
